Lovely readers, I'm sorry it's been a while. Lots has been going on at Number Five; the man who makes everything in the house happen, Matthew, was home so we have had two room makeovers, a magazine shoot for a well known Interiors mag (eekkkk!!!) a trip to London and a cheeky couple of days away in one of my favourite cities, Copenhagen, to say it's been busy is quite the understatement. I don't know about you guys but whenever I am super busy with lots on my plate my sleep goes to completely by the wayside and I'm either counting sheep at 1 am or scrolling through Instagram, Twitter, Buzzfeed etc until I eventually pass out. I am such a bear with a sore head if I haven't had my 7 hours sleep so I've added a few things into my routine which are really helping me reach sleep nirvana, so much so that I thought I would share with you so you can incorporate a few things into your routine too.
Good sheets and a tidy house
Now we all know the power of freshly laundered sheets, and this post isn't going to tell you any different, but I have really noticed a different in my sleep pattern when I have linen sheets on... I know it's the Pin-thing to have linen sheets but I always wake up in an over heated mess. They have gone the journey and I am now all about organic cotton. It keeps me cool, has the loveliest feel to it and is just so lovely to snuggle into of a night time. I picked up this gorgeous set from my fave store West Elm, a couple of months back. It was an expensive treat, however it washes so well, looks gorgeous and I think it's helping me get towards my 7 hours. I love the subtle and simple grey embroidered stitching on the set too which fits perfectly with the light grey of our wardrobe doors. I just love it.
Before bed I make sure I do a sweep of the house, make sure cups are in the dishwasher, socks in the linen basket, cushions plumped and in the right place, lunch prepared, kettle filled and tea cup, Clipper Everyday tea and spoon waiting on the kitchen counter ready for the morning wake up call. It's amazing what can wonder through your mind of an evening and believe it or not these were some of mine, but not any more! I also make sure the bedroom is looking it's best as it has been proven by science that if you sleep in messy surroundings your sleep could be messy too.
Lush Sleepy Cream
Always one to follow the hype as soon as I spotted this cream had come back into stock in my local Lush I had to try it out! Finding a pot was like trying to find a unicorn roaming the Cotswolds but it has revolutionised my evening routine and sleep pattern too. I use the lilac coloured lotion post shower or bath to help me drift off to a peaceful night's sleep. It has beautiful aromats such as Tonka bean (my fave; I always wear Jo Malone's xx and Tonka Bean Eau du Cologne), oatmeal and of course, lavender but this uses the flower and is a little more subtle that the dried lavender that is used in a lot of 'help you sleep' remedies. This really does work sometimes when I forget to put it on post shower, I really do notice the difference drifting off to the land of nod. I will definitely be repurchasing this, in fact I can't remember what life was like before this, it really is the stuff of (sweet!) dreams! See what I did there - a career in puns perhaps?!
Clipper's Snore and Peace
I tried a cup of Clipper's Snore and Peace a couple of years back ever since there has always been a box or two in my kitchen cupboard. A cup of Sleepy tea, as it's affectionally known at Number Five, has become part of my pre-bedtime routine in particular if there is something stressful coming up the next day. I always try to have a cup of Snore and Peace before bed or whilst in the bath, it really does help your shoulders relax and help clear the mind of all that busy stuff! It is a real comforting somewhat soothing cup of tea that is delicately fragranced with chamomile, lavender and lemon balm. Clipper Teas are all organic, natural and so yum! Plus these are individually wrapped so if staying away with work I can pop a couple in my bag so I can try and have the perfect nights sleep in my Travelodge accommodation.
Time to switch off...
Which I know is easier said than done in this day in age. We are a generation that is always on; in the evenings my time is taken up by catching up on work tasks, the blog, replying to emails, social media posts, comments and hashtags and generally just being available at any time of the day. I've recently made a real conscience effort to try and not be on all the time and try and keep off my phone before bed, even though it doesn't always work when I do stick to it it is really helping with my stress levels and the knock on to my sleep has been great!
My fave way to switch off is a soak in my gorgeous bathtub, candles lit, podcast playing - I just love my chill time. However it's a bit of a time luxury so i've recently started having super hot showers with aromatherapy oils to help get that spa like zen vibe quickly.
This Works Sleep Plus+ Pillow Spray
You may have already heard and in fact use a This Works pillow spray and this is another product that really does stand up to it's cult following. I have to go full strength and use the Sleep Plus+ for my pillow spray, the original just doesn't quite cut it for me but the max strength version is simply fantastic. I spray on my pillow before bed and within a short space of time I am drifting off to the land of dreams. When I use this pillow spray, and at the moment that is quite regular, I always wake up feeling really refreshed, like I have had a really good night's sleep.
I hope some of these tips and products will be useful helping you drift off into the land of sweetest dreams. Would love to hear if you have any other tips I should be using to help me get the best night's sleep possible.
